This Concept Changed How I See Productivity
Hello changemakers đź‘‹
This week, I want to talk about something that I’ve struggled myself for long time, and probably some of you as well, and that is giving myself permission to rest.
As high-achievers, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that any break from productivity is laziness. And personally, there’s been many times where I was feeling guilty thinking I should be doing something productive instead of laying on the couch watching Netflix, but still didn’t do the thing, just making me feel more guilty.
But once I heard of the concept of Fuck it, nothing from Grace Beverly, author of the book Working Hard, Hardly Working, and it entirely changed my perspective on this topic.
I learned about this concept a few years ago when I was burning the candle at both ends—working full-time while trying to grow a side hustle. There were days when I would get home from a long day at work, ready to crash on the couch. But instead of giving in to that tired feeling, my inner voice would be screaming: "You need to get back to work. You need to stay productive." So, I’d sit there, glued to the sofa, convincing myself that in 30 minutes, I’d get up and start working again.
Spoiler alert: that didn’t happen. And it just made me feel bad.
That was until I was hearing an interview she did for a podcast and she said: “Sometimes you just need to say Fuck it, I will do nothing today and just enjoy a period of rest, instead of half-resting while thinking of all the things you should be doing, and then feeling bad for not doing them and not feeling well-rested because you weren’t really mentally resting“.
Her words stuck with me. It was a simple statement, but it changed how I approached productivity. The concept of Fuck it, nothing is all about giving yourself permission to do nothing, and I mean nothing. No productive walks. No shower thoughts that turn into breakthrough ideas. Just rest. As a society, we often equate rest with laziness. But what if taking a step back wasn’t a sign of failure, but a strategy for future success?
Here’s the thing—doing less today can actually lead to doing more tomorrow. By taking time off and recharging, you’re setting yourself up for more meaningful, high-quality work later on. It’s a short-term trade-off for long-term gains.
Now, when I hit those low-energy moments, instead of forcing myself to push through, I just go “Fuck it, I’m gonna do nothing today”. I remind myself it’s okay to write off the day, order takeaway, and play video games guilt-free. It’s not wasted time—it’s me recharging so that tomorrow I can get back to what really matters with full energy.
So here’s my challenge to you this week: give yourself the permission to do less. If you’re feeling drained, don’t force productivity. Instead, take a step back, rest, and recharge. You’ll thank yourself tomorrow.
Wishing you a restful, guilt-free week ahead,
Ignasi 🚀
My latest videos đź“Ľ
✨ A GENIUS Way To Make PowerPoint Slides With AI (ChatGPT) - For years, to me what of the most draining tasks of my job has been making PowerPoint slides. But luckily AI is revolutionizing many of the tasks that people do at work, including making slides. In this video I go through how I use ChatGPT to make pptx slides for work, saving me hours and making sure I can spend my time in other things that I enjoy more.
Things I’m liking this week 🥰
🎮 Video game - Persona 5 Royal - I bought this game back in 2020 during the COVID lockdown and I absolutely loved every second of it. After a few years I just decided to replay it, and it’s still hands-down one of the best JRPGs I’ve ever played, if not the best. Definitely a nice way to use my Fuck it nothing time :)
🎙 Podcast - How I Raised $6.5M In Series A Funding: The Pitch Deck - Since I’m talking about Grace Beverly in this article, I would definitely recommend her podcast. A couple of weeks back I checked this episode and I loved how honest and transparent she was throughout the video, worth a watch.
Question of the week 🤔
What would happen if you intentionally wrote off a day this week to focus on rest?
