The One Productivity Trick You Need

Hello changemakers πŸ‘‹

Already for a few years I’ve been reading about productivity tips and learning all sort of hacks to boost your productivity dramatically. And, after trying a few of them, I would say there was one super simple idea that has really been a game-changer for me: focusing on a daily highlight.

Imagine your future self looking back at your day. What would they want you to have accomplished? This is the core question behind the "Daily Highlight" concept from the book Make Time. Another way to think about it is: what do I want to be the most proud of today?

Stuck for ideas? Here are some prompts:

  • What would bring me the most satisfaction if I finished it today?

  • What would make today truly awesome?

  • What's the most urgent task that absolutely needs to get done?

I've been using Outlook to put this into practice. Each morning, I do a quick check-in with myself. First, I identify my daily highlight. Then, I jot down a few other things I'd like to accomplish to make it a truly great day, and e-mail them to myself.

Usually I send each thing as an e-mail, writing only on the subject and leaving the body of the e-mail empty, so I end with 3-4 e-mails to myself which I move into my priority folder on things to-do that day.

Here's the cool part: sometimes I don't even finish everything I set myself to. But just by writing it down, I prime my brain to work on it in the background. It's like planting a productivity seed! Personally I've tried countless hacks over the years. But this Daily Highlight routine is quickly becoming one of my favorites. On most days, when I set a highlight, I manage to crush it.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes in a few months. In the meantime, have a fantastic rest of the week!

Cheers,

Question of the week πŸ€”

What currently feels like the biggest time-drain in your day? Could a "Daily Highlight" focused on tackling that make a significant difference?
